AS Media SECTION B: Institutions and Audiences

Dear AS Students,

As you know Section B of your exam concerns the film industry and the production, distribution and exhibition process. Here is some information below to help you!

You need to be prepared to discuss all the bullet points below in relation to both your US and British Case Studies. For example you may choose Film4 with 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 20th Century Fox with 'X Men: First Class'. Although filmed in British studios with British cast and crew the Harry Potter franchise 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' would also prove an interesting case study as it is produced and distributed through a US studio, Warner Bros and targeted at both a UK and US audience.

Candidates should be prepared to understand and discuss the processes of production, distribution, marketing and exchange as they relate to contemporary media institutions, as well as the nature of audience consumption and the relationships between audiences and institutions. In addition, candidates should be familiar with:

With your exam coming up please find below what the OCR board outlines in the specification for SECTION B: Institution and Audiences.

• the issues raised by media ownership in contemporary media practice;
• the importance of cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing;
• the technologies that have been introduced in recent years at the levels of production, distribution, marketing and exchange;
the significance of proliferation in hardware and content for institutions and audiences;
• the importance of technological convergence for institutions and audiences;
• the issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (specifically, British) by international or global institutions;
• the ways in which the candidates’ own experiences of media consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends of audience behaviour.

REVISION SESSIONS WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY 3rd MAY AT LUNCHTIME AND TUESDAY 7TH MAY AT 3.20PM.

SEE YOU THERE!

A2 Film Studies: Creative Project Work

Aims and Context: FM1 & FM3

Below are a series of bullet points to help you write up your Aims and Context for FM3 Creative Project.  You will need to put this together by the end of next week (26th January) for me to check and guide you further with your projects. For assessment purposes, a series of bullet points on the relevant coversheet, highlighting the following is sufficient:

Genre of film (or equivalent if it’s not in an obvious genre)

Whether it’s a short film or extract (and if so, whether it’s opening, climactic

sequences etc)

Target audience

Key stylistic elements of sequence (cinematography, editing)

For A2, candidates may refer to film issues raised during their studies at AS/A2.

The example below gives a hypothetical example for A2 and includes reference to film

issues raised during AS and A2 studies.

Example: Farewell my Maltese Lady from Shanghai – film/video production for

FM3

Comedy film noir short.

Target audience of 18-year-old, middle-class males, knowledgeable about film.

Apply cinematography techniques developed in FM1.

Explore codes and conventions of genre and apply theoretical work on gender.

As director, try out directing techniques (from writers such as Michael Rabiger).

 Use Mike Leigh’s improvisational technique with actors.

Homework Saul Bass

Year 12 Media Studies - Homework Saul Bass Titles

It appears that lots of you have not completed the Saul Bass research which is quite disappointing. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find useful links to help you and click on previous posts to view 3 different opening sequences. You should be spending 4 hours a week on media work outside of lesson time and this is not evident from the lack of work being handed in. Also none of you have sent me your email addresses/ URL's for your own blog pages.  Without these you will be unable to progress with your planning for production which is 50% of your exam. Please get these to me as soon as possible!  My email address is: caroeastwood@yahoo.co.uk
